Where to Watch USA vs. Canada: Feb. 28, 2010

Sunday, February 28, 2010, 3:15pm (EST)
Olympic Hockey: Team USA vs. Team Canada

Here are some places to watch in New York City...

Bar Coastal Goes Canadian
Bar Coastal always had a west coast vibe, so having the Olympics in Vancouver was right up their ally. They "went Canadian" for two weeks with specials on Molson and Moosehead beer during the entire Winter Olympics. But they are a true American bar, so for today's big game, they add Budweiser to the mix:
$2 pints of Bud & Bud light in addition to
$3 Molson Drafts and $3 Moosehead Bottles
while showing the USA vs. Canada gold medal game.

Great Guinness Toast in NYC - Friday, February 19, 2010

Tonight is the 18th annual Great Guinness Toast.
Punters from around the globe will raise their Guinness simultaneously. The toast was started by the folks of Mullaney's Harp & Fiddle Pub in Pittsburgh, PA (Wikipedia) to set the record for largest toast. In New York (and anywhere in the Eastern Time Zone) the toast occurs at 11pm.
I have searched for more information on it, but even the website TheGreatGuinnessToast.com didn't have much news. So, in our continuous efforts to "connect the fun to the fun people", we provide you with a list of places to get a great pint of Guinness in NYC.

Now, some might think that a pint is a pint, and they are all the same. Maybe for some draught beer, but with Guinness (and most stouts), it is not necessarily true. In addition to factors such as the cleanliness of the tap lines and the glass, and temperature, the actual act of pouring of a stout has a profound influence on the quality of the pint. Guinness likes to say that a perfect pint is built. So a venue and bartenders that takes their Guinness seriously will take steps to pour the proper pint.

The list below is simply a list some of my favorite places to enjoy a Guinness in NYC. I must say the "research" was exhausting (no it wasn't). They are in no particular order, and feel free to add your own favorites in the comments section. Slainte!

Each show also has a curated video aspect: Our first show is going to have videos provided by IFC's The Whitest Kids 'U Know."

Brian Kirk and the Jirks, is a notorious cover band hailing from the Jersey Shore, (think more of the "Bruce" kind of Jersey Shore, not the "Snooki" Jersey Shore). They are well known for their Sunday residency at Donovan's Reef in Sea Bright, NJ. Formed in the early 1990s by lead singer, Brian Kirk, the band covers all styles of music from rock to pop, oldies to reggae, and standards to swing. An extremely diverse repertoire of covers is complimented by their original music, including songs from their albums Hangover Mondays and more recently, American Life In the Summertime.

Not only have they headlined with national acts such as Tonic and Better Than Ezra, and have shared the stage with legendary drummer T.M. Steven and bassist Bernard Purdy from the James Brown Band, but check out this guest appearance by none other than Bruce Springsteen himself from Labor Day, 2001:

Today in NYC: Friday, February 12

We kick off a triple header 3-day holiday weekend: Valentine's Day, President's Day, Mardi Gras.

Tonight, there are a few events that will raise funds for the continued relief efforts in Haiti. Both Healing Arts for Haiti at The Grand Hyatt and Love for Haiti at Hudson Terrace will raise funds for UNICEF. The Town Tavern's Miami Vice / Valentine's themed party, "Be Mi(ami) Valentine ♥ to Help Haiti" will also raise funds for a Haiti related charity.
