Thank you, veterans! Happy Veteran's Day

Today is Veteran's Day in the U.S. Take a moment to thank a veteran. As I've seen posted on many a facebook status update today:
"A veteran is someone, who at one point in their life, wrote a blank check payable to the United States of America for an amount up to, and including their life. That is beyond honor, and there are way too many people in this country who no longer remember that fact."
I don't know who the author is, but it is well said, although I would warn against writing a blank check to anyone.

Our friends at The Mean Fiddler are hosting a Veteran's Day event today:

Winter's Eve at Lincoln Center: Monday, Dec. 1

Winter's Eve at Lincoln Center
The Lincoln Square Business Improvement District hosts the Ninth Annual Winter's Eve at Lincoln Square.

Billed as NYC's largest holiday festival, Winter's Eve features free entertainment, food tastings, in-store activities and shopping all around the Lincoln Center neighborhood.
Sidewalks along Broadway from Time Warner Center at Columbus Circle to 68th St. will be alive with performers, street musicians, jugglers, stilt-walkers and more.

Highlights include:

Tree lighting at Dante Park - 5:30pm
Since Lincoln Center is under construction, the tree-lighting moves this year to Dante Park (Broadway between 63rd & 64th St.)

The Bacon Brothers

Emmy Award winner Michael Bacon along with his brother Kevin will perform two sets on the Winter's Eve Main Stage:
64th St. (east of Broadway)
6:30pm & 7:30pm

The Drum Cafe: 6 - 9pm
Interactive drum experience with world-class drummers. The Drum Cafe concept is a unique hands-on application of African drums and percussion that not only entertains but energizes audiences.

Cool Mondays: The Jazz Nativity - 6pm
A special peformance of highlights from The Jazz Nativity by Anne Philips featuring performers Frank Wess, Jimmy Heath, Lew Soloff, Candido, Hank Jones, Steve Turre, Ingrid Jensen, Warren Vache and the role of Mary sung by Hilary Kole. The show brings together two worlds, the world of theater and the world of jazz. It brings together people of all ages, backgrounds and beliefs.
Barnes & Noble: Broadway at 66th St

The Hungry March Band
Roaring out of Brooklyn comes the Hungry March Band, NYC's legendary street brass march band in the anarchic style that has become their trademark. Put on your dancing shoes and break out the fancy threads because they’ve got a party going on - a blazing parade of flesh, blood, steel, brass and wood. They are the music of the people.
Performing throughout Lincoln Square all evening.

Food Tastings:
From 6 -8pm, some of the Lincoln Square area’s finest restaurants will offer food tastings either for free or at a nominal cost ($1-$4) under canopies in front of Time Warner Center at Columbus Circle, along Broadway between 63rd & 64th St., and at Richard Tucker Park (between 65th & 66th St.)
