St. Patrick's Day Parade: Tuesday, March 17

#18 in our month-long series of St. Patrick's Day events:
Happy St. Patrick's Day!
The largest and most famous event of the St. Patrick's Day season is the New York City St. Patrick's Day Parade. The parade starts at 11am and goes up Fifth Ave. from 44th St. to 86th St. Thousands of pipers & drummers, marching bands, Hibernians, cops, firemen, nurses, dancers, equestrians, students and Irish men and women from all 32 counties will proudly march up the avenue, as has been tradition since 1766, making it the oldest parade in NYC in addition to the largest.
[see the official line of march here (pdf)]

The parade is traditionally lead by the "Irish Brigade" of the 69th Regiment. This year is particularly special as it marks the recent homecoming of more than 300 soldier of the "Fighting 69th" from their recent tour of duty in Afghanistan. After the parade, The Friends of the 69th will be hosting a homecoming reception for them at their armory on Lexington & 25th, featuring entertainment by Gary Sinise and the Lt. Dan Band.

Parade tips:
- To avoid the biggest crowds, go north of 65th St.
- Do not try to drive across town between 42nd and 86th St.
- Crossing Fifth Ave. may be prohibited at certain times & locations, so pick a side and stick with it.
- Show some respect for the saint, and more importantly, yourself. Don't be a plastic paddy.
- Avoid public drunkenness (this means you, kids from the suburbs).
