Our next spotlight artist is guitarist Steve Antonakos, a.k.a. Homeboy Steve. Our description of Steve will be brief, just like his answers to our questions were brief:
Steve is a talented guitarist that plays in several bands, makes cool flyers for his gigs, reads MurphGuide.com on occasion and answered our questions below:
How long have you been performing?
35 years.
Past lives (i.e., previous bands, your early years, etc.):
Blue Chieftans, NY Loose, 5 Chinese Brothers, Greg Garing
Favorite venues to play:
Banjo Jim's, Hill Country, The Ear Inn, The National Underground
Musical influences:
First Jimi Hendrix and Duane Allman, then a lot of other stuff . . .
Tell us a story or anecdote about performing live.
The gig never ends, it's just that some breaks are longer than others.
Any advice to someone just starting out?
Don't stop.
Blatant self-promotion: What would you like to plug?
Look out for new records by Dirty Water Dogs, Love Camp 7, Homeboy Steve

Triangle Shirtwaist Factory Fire: 100 Years Ago
Today marks one hundred years since the Triangle Shirtwaist factory fire, a significant event in NYC and US history. The fire at 29 Washington Pl. in Greenwich Village, killed 146 people, most of them young female Jewish & Italian immigrants, including many children. A "shirtwaist" is another name for a blouse, and the aftermath of this disaster lead to major reforms in industrial and fire safety. You can learn more about the event on wikipedia, or if you have time, check out the documentary "American Experience: Triangle Fire" on PBS.org.
But Murph, you might ask, what does this have to do with NYC nightlife?
Nothing, really, but below is a video of our friend Pat Robinson of The Itinerants, singing a song he wrote about the Triangle Shirtwaist fire. It was recorded at a recent performance at Kenny's Castaways in Greenwich Village, a few blocks away from the site. So there you go...
Video by Peter Perenyi. Song written & performed by Pat Robinson.
