*Foley's ban on the singing of the song "Danny Boy" has received much media attention.
Pub owner Shaun Clancy believes the song is so overplayed that he’s offering a free pint of Guinness to anyone who sings a traditional Irish tune other than Danny Boy, and he has famously banned it for the entire month of March.
“Although it is considered by many as the ultimate Irish ballad, it is far from it. In fact, the lyrics were written by a guy who wasn’t even Irish,” Clancy said. “The song is more popular outside Ireland than within and is sung so often that one would think there are no other Irish songs. There certainly are loads of other ballads in Irish musical songbook that are more up tempo, and quite honestly, more fun to sing than a song that is so often played at funerals.”
