The annual Nathan's hot dog eating contest, held on the 4th of July at Nathan's in Coney Island, takes place on Surf Ave. today in Brooklyn. According to NathansFamous.com, the contest has been held each year since 1916 (with two exceptions: 1941 and 1971).
The big showdown today is a re-match with defending champion Joey Chestnut trying to retain his title, while six time champion Takeru Kobayashi of Japan tries to win it back.
